Who THE SON sets free is free indeed.
It’s something that we, as citizens of the United States of America, enjoy to an extent that no other people in the world get to enjoy. By virtue of where we are born, we have rights and privileges afforded to us that others around the world are still dreaming of, are still fighting for, and are still dying for.
And while we celebrate the birth of that freedom early this month, as Christians, we know the freedom we enjoy as US Citizens is not the ultimate freedom to celebrate.
The freedom that we should truly rejoice in above all other freedoms is the freedom from sin and bondage that we have in Christ. Without His death and resurrection, we are trapped. We are lost. But because of His blood, by His stripes, we are healed and whole, able to approach God without shame, and able to spend eternity with Him.
Our earthly freedom should certainly be celebrated, and it should be protected, not just by our armed forces, but by us, in how we vote, what we lobby for, and how we spend our dollars.
But thank goodness we can celebrate our spiritual freedom without having to worry about protecting it! The freedom God gives to us remains constant no matter where we live or who our earthly leaders may be. And even though, at times, it can feel like our earthly freedoms and liberties are under attack or threatened, praise God that the spiritual freedom He gives us can never be taken away!
